Larger the font more the followers they have
Colors are randomly selected for each cumulative base.
Source is Spotify API, tools used is Gephi and Photoshop
I used "Fruchterman Reingold" method to place nodes
Closer artist have more common fan-base vice versa
I also share my work on my Instagram @mycodventure not sure if that's allowed to credit myself...?
Edit: Since this one blew up it made my day, unfortunately I only included rock genre in this graph, under this comment please advice me some other genres you want, I am thinking a remake with much grander scale

This looks awesome but I don't understand what it represents.
colors are randomly selected for each cumulative base
Cumulative base ? What does that mean ?
Does the distance matter ? The farther apart artists are, the less they are linked ?
Sorry this really interests me and I am just trying to understand

Something I find really interesting is in the bottom right there is a bunch of my favourite bands, Deftones, A Perfect Circle, Chevelle and Bush, but Tool (which is very similar to APC as they have the same singer and similar sound to their songs) is no where to be seen near them and is more popular than APC

Well to be clear this is not a predictive chart. It’s not like this is spitting out what music people will listen to in the future. It’s just measuring existing popularity and overlap between artists’ existing fans. You’re right about the algorithms shaping taste, but that’s not exactly what the above chart is getting at

I dreamed up a project like this threeish years ago, where you input your specific artists, tag them with the adjectives you like, and you can then compare your data with other users. 78% of people who like x or y like both x and y; 13% of our user base likes x; 22% of your friends also like x; the most popular artist among your friends is x; here are the top 5 adjectives for x compared to yours; users with your picks and adjectives also liked x; and so on.
The problems are: there are several shittier and/or less complete versions of this idea that have since existed and I don’t want to be accused of thought crime. Also copyright maybe? Maybe it could be a Spotify tool. As I’m typing this I’m thinking about scooping up all the programmers I know and seeing if it’s possible. Sorry for the stream of consciousness reply!

Did you select the bands? Where is the pool from? I really REALLY like this but the lack of some essential music is there. I'd consider making this graph but use big genre-defining bands and see how those connect and who fits in-between them. I'm just seeing a disturbing lack of rap and classic rock. Rage Against the Machine needs a slot bad bad.

I think Spotify’s ‘related artists’ is based more off of who listeners of one artist also listen to and STRFKR is kinda old indie so it makes sense that they would line up with Dr. Dog and Shakey. Though, only their 2016 album was really synth wave. Their first few albums are definitely more typical indie. I mean their self titled was an indie classic. Their newest album is great too, and definitely not synthwave.

What TØP song did you search up? If it was one of their more popular (Heathens, Stressed Out, Ride, Chlorine) then you probably would find Imagine Dragons. Both bands had top chart songs so they're often shoved together. Other not so popular TØP songs would most likely not lead you to Imagine Dragons.

This reminds me of that meme where it’s like “rock radio stations be like: you’re cool cuz you listen to rock. All other music is lame but rock is COOL and you’re badass cuz you listen to ROCK. Anyway, here’s some Imagine Dragons followed by Twenty One Pilots”

How in the hell does Imagine Dragons have the most followers?
That band is literally worse than Nickelback.

They're a pop powerhouse that can get on literally any radio station. Real "Sound of Muzak" vibes (from Porcupine Tree) that they put off. Easy background music for retail stores, commercials, etc.
I will defend Radioactive though, because a bunch of friends and I did a drunk/drugged online karaoke of it and recorded it, so it's sentimental.

Start here : http://everynoise.com/
They have 41 variants of reggae (including polish reggae!?!). Here is the map for reggae: http://everynoise.com/engenremap-reggae.html
From there (or any other genre) you can generate different spotify playlists.
Playlist - a large representative sample of the genre Intro - a shorter "best of" list from the Playlist Pulse - what fans of this genre are listening to right now Edge - rare tracks that fans of the genre are listening to that are popping up or disappearing quickly. I find this to be hit or miss but have found some pretty cool stuff this way. 2019- what fans of this genre listened to last year
There is some other cool stuff on that site so check it out!

Sum 41 is more popular than I thought. I remember them from freshman year of high school then they fell off the mainstream radar after that. Maybe the lead singer being married to Avril Lavigne for a while had something to do with it too, idk.

If this represented a radio station, this is 100% Philadelphia’s alternative station Radio 104.5 (and probably other alt stations too). They host big shows every year with big and small artists, and they’ve had bands from all over this graphic perform at them.
This cloud also seems to represent a few of my Daily Mixes on Spotify lol. I’d love to see this done for other genres!

Do you have one with other genres? Some hip-hop and country would be cool to see.

Neat content! I'd be interested in something similar to do with exclusively Rap Music. I think it'd be particularly interesting to see how the east-west coast feud is reflected, and who might bridge that gap etc (if at all).
